Possible Tuition Discounts (or Reciprocity Agreements)
Want to pay in-state tuition but attend an out-of-state college or university? If no college in your state offers your desired major, check out these potential college discounts.
NASFAA State Financial Aid Association - Regional College Tuition Discounts - Check your state's higher education board and the universities you're interested in to learn more about college discounts. A "reciprocity agreement" means that a college has agreed to discount your tuition based on your state of residence and approved major. For example, if you live in a Southern Region state and no college offers a ballet major, the University of Oklahoma will allow you to pay in-state tuition. Other participating private colleges offer discounted tuition. (NOTE: Most of the discounts are related to graduate level programs.)
Southern Region The Southern Regional Education Board (Academic Common Market) provides a few bachelor degree discounts for students from Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware.
Midwestern Region The Midwest Student Exchange offers discounts for students from Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Wisconsin.
Western Region The Western Undergraduate Exchange offers undergraduate discounts for students in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.
New England Region The New England Regional Student Program offers undergraduate discounts for students in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
In 2016, the University of Maine began offering in-state tuition to students in five neighboring states. They want to increase their out-of-state enrollment and boost the number of young professions that stay in Maine to raise a family.
